Christmas Eve Eve

A couple of things on my mind:

*When you have a dog that's your "baby" and then you have a real baby, the dog turns back into a dog.

*My neighbor is very festive and goes all out for every holiday. I really appreciate it and wish more people were like that. We go look at his Christmas display almost every night. Yesterday he put a sign (sheet) over his garage that said "Dear Santa, All we want for Christmas is our Mom to come home" It broke my heart. I'm so grateful I'm not in that situation because I could be very easily. I think I'm gonna make him some cookies. I'll tell him it's because we get so much happiness from his lights I thought I'd repay him. It's really because I know there's probably not a lot of baking getting done without Mom there...

*I went to Big Lots and got a 4' pink prelit Christmas tree for Aubree's room for $4.75. I'm pretty ecstatic!

I've been thinking...

...even more about Aubree's first birthday.
It looks like it's just going to be the 3 of us :(
I was really wanting to do a Dr. Seuss theme, but I want to save it for an actual party
(I think, I'm very indecisive)
So... what kind of cake can I do?
I'm having an internal battle because it's just us, but it's her only 1st birthday.
It should sort of be a big deal no matter what, right?

Beginning to feel a little like Christmas.

Today I took a nap with Aubree. When we woke up, I looked outside and saw.... SNOW!!

Aubree meets Santa!

I wondered how this moment would be. If she'd be scared, or just confused, but she didn't even seem to notice she was on somebody's lap! It was SO cold out there and a ton of people around.

This is our Christmas card, too, btw!

Here's the only "family" picture that made it from the night:

Doing the sick dancey dance.

One thing I've learned this month: Having a sick child sucks!

Derek's went TDY and my Dad came in stay while he was away. Aubree decides that's the perfect time to get sick. She started with a runny nose, then came the cough, sneezes, pulling of the ear, fever, vomiting (from all the mucus in her head), and lethargy.
Nice, huh?
I took her to the doctor 2 days ago and they said she had an ear infection in both ears. They gave her some amoxicillin and sent her on her way.
Well, her fever got worse, I couldn't get her to swallow tylenol and she refused to eat, so I took her back. We saw a different doctor who said neither of her ears were infected. She ran a flu test which came back negative and did a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia. The conclusion is: it's viral. Which basically translates into "Your child has to suffer through this misery. Sorry"
Seeing your child sick is worse than being sick yourself . Being sick is never fun, but it doesn't break your heart like watching your child go through it.

*Editor's note: Aubree is better now with the help of some Pedialyte, and Yo Gabba Gabba.

Random Thoughts

My baby is walking. Officially. Everywhere. Not perfect of course, but it's her preferred means of travel.

I got to a church with a coffee shop and bookstore in it. Everybody wears jeans. And drinks their lattes in the auditorium. They have a crazy childcare system that provides pagers to the mothers and if you get paged, they have a room upstairs you can go watch church with your baby. Rocking chairs provided. They even have a college... or something. I'm still confused on that. It's pretty crazy. But I really like it.

I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving... and Christmas! It's still in the 70's here. Definitely doesn't feel like the holiday season I know. My Dad is coming Wednesday. I'm really excited. Maybe being around some family will make it feel more festive.

We have tickets home. Jan 17-Feb 7. I'm SO excited. I can't wait for everybody to meet Aubree. I still can't believe some of the most important people in my life haven't even met her.

-Hold on, I have to change the song. That one makes me sad... -

Ok!

:) Happy again.

And the last random thought crossing my mind is how I have 123096654163210884610 things to be thankful for. Obviously around Thanksgiving, you think about that list more than you do throughout the rest of the year, but it really hit home today when I heard that the poorest person in America is better off than 70% of the world. I'll try to think twice before complaining about something very minute again.

Very blessed,
Brooke

Picture time again!

We had Aubree's pictures taken today!
We started at Kiddie Kandids. She was in a mood and the photographer wasn't up to par, so we headed to The Picture People. Here's what we came home with:

*Excuse the quality, they didn't have photo c.d.'s to purchase, so I had to scan them.

Look what a big girl I have! Not even 8 months old!

1 year today...

Allois Evanoff Dotson
Today make a year since we lost my Grandmother.
She ended up raising me, so she was more than a Grandmother to me. She was, and still is, the epitome of what kind of woman I want to become. Selflessly quiet spoken & kind hearted she is who I think about when situations get frustrating:
WWMD-What would Mammaw do?
Last night when I prayed, I thanked God for giving me 25 years with her and making her such a good example to live by. I've really been blessed to have such an awsesome person in my life.

Happy Halloween

I figured every year to come, Aubree would have something in mind to be for Halloween. This year may have been my only chance to dress her up myself and embarrass her a little bit!

Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 egg
1 egg yolk
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.
In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until well blended. Beat in the vanilla, egg, and egg yolk until light and creamy. Mix in the sifted ingredients until just blended. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand using a wooden spoon. Drop cookie dough 1/4 cup at a time onto the prepared cookie sheets. Cookies should be about 3 inches apart.
Bake for 15 to 17 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are lightly toasted. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

THESE ARE AMAZING!

*Be sure to use real vanilla extract, it makes all the difference!

Brookie Homemaker

A couple of years ago I got a sewing machine for Christmas. I tried to use it once and couldn't get it threaded.

When my Grandma came out here she threaded it for me and made Aubree a rocking chair cushion using it. Proof that it works :)

So... we just bought Aubree a new big girl car seat and I it didn't come with strap cushions, so I decided to take things into my own hands!

Here's the finished product:

Not too shabby for my first try, huh? It took about an hour from start to finish. I'm very shocked/happy/surprised/proud of the finished product.

Meat-a-licious

Once a month my only 2 friends in Vegas (Pam & Stephanie) and I would get our families together for dinner. Stephanie was a vegetarian. Making meals around that proved to be quite challenging sometimes.

Well, Stephanie moved to New York a couple of months ago leaving our menu open to many more possibilities. In her honor, Pam & I decided to have an all meat dinner. That menu proved to be just as challenging!

The line-up: Turkey, mac-n-cheese with ham, Mexican cornbread and the most interesting dish for desert:

Yes, that is chocolate covered bacon!

Surprisingly....ok. Sweet yet salty.

WE MISS YOU JEFFANIE!
